Killer bees attack 20 people in downtown Alajuela, 11 taken to hospital

May 13th, 2014 (InsideCostaRica.com) A swarm of Africanized honeybees, known colloquially as “killer bees,” attacked some twenty people yesterday in downtown Alajuela, eleven of whom were taken to the hospital.

The incident occurred at 11:15 a.m. near the Arpe hardware store.  Fire Department and Red Cross units were dispatched to the scene to assist those injured in the attack.

Eleven people taken to the hospital were all reported in stable condition.

Yesterday’s incident isn’t the first case of attacks by Africanized bees this year.

In February, two U.S. citizens were forced from their home in Desamparaditos de Puriscal when a swarm of Africanized bees filled their home.  Firefighters who attended the scene found the home completely overrun with the aggressive bees.  Water and special foam were used to control the insects.

Also in February, a swarm of Africanized bees attacked a horse parade known as a “tope” in Ciudad Colon.  Several bystanders and horses were injured in the attack.
