Coast Guard seizes 1,900 kilos of cocaine in “most important seizure in years”

May 8th, 2014 (ISH) The Costa Rican Coast Guard confiscated about 1,900 kilograms of cocaine off two fishing vessels in the Pacific Ocean near the city of Golfito as part of Operation MARTILLO, Public Security Minister Mario Zamora said on May 6.

“This is the most important seizure in years,” Zamora said during a press conference the next day. “I have the honor of saying goodbye with the announcement of one of the greatest strikes against drug trafficking in recent years,” he added.

Zamora and the rest of outgoing President Laura Chinchilla’s staff exits office on May 8. Costa Rican authorities have seized nearly 52 tons of cocaine since Chinchilla was sworn in on May 8, 2010.

Three suspects who were arrested in connection with the seizure could face between eight and 10 years in prison if convicted.

Incoming Public Security Minister Celso Gamboa Sánchez thanked the U.S. for detecting the suspicious vessels traveling toward the U.S.

Operation MARTILLO is a multinational effort that includes Canada, Belize, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, France, Guatemala, Honduras, the Netherlands, Nicaragua, Panama, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States. It strives to disrupt transnational criminal organizations by limiting their ability to use Central America as a transit zone.

The three suspects were released by the judge. A kilo is worth $6000 or $15,000 if you believe Zamora or $11.4 – $28,5 million. How much is a get out of jail card worth in this monopoly game?

Do you think that the bad guys threatened the judge and his family?

      • disgusted

YEP! there is understanding and the judges know the consequences. What do you bet they also get the boat back as well.. Were is the coke! need you ask? Dog and pony show here.

  • stfree

Yep, big bust all right – over two tons of coke. Who was arrested? Are they being held? Where’s the coke?

  • gary

They are free. The judge released them according to one paper because they are “family’ men. Aren’t members of the Mafia etc. known as family men? Here is the quote: “Judge Mora didn’t feel the three suspects, aged 26, 29 and 38 and with the last names Quirós Vásquez, Miranda Vásquez and Quirós Ledezma, were flight risks because they live in the area and have families there. He denied a prosecutor’s motion for preventive detention, releasing the suspects on their own recognizance.”
