March 4th, 2014 (InsideCostaRica.com) Ana Doris Gonzalez, president of the Association of Secondary School Teachers (APSE) and Gliberth Diaz of the Costa Rican Education Union (SEC) have announced a second round of strikes and demonstrations by public sector labor unions scheduled for March 20th, this time throughout the entire country.
The pair made the announcement in an interview with the daily Diario Extra.
Gonzalez and Diaz said unions would demonstrate against economic policies put forward by both presidential candidates (Johnny Araya and Luis Guillermo Solis) that they say would bring more poverty to Costa Ricans. Gonzalez and Diaz said unions oppose additional taxes as well as changes to their compensation and pension schemes.
Unions are also upset at the minimal wage increase for public workers set by executive decree for 2014.
The union leaders said massive demonstrations are planned in San José as well as many areas throughout the country.
The union leaders described last week’s strikes as “only a rehearsal,” for what would come on March 20th.
