Lawmaker questions purchase of luxury vehicles by MSP

Carmen Muñoz (PAC)

Carmen Muñoz (PAC)

February 28th, 2014 (InsideCostaRica.com) Citizen Action Party (PAC) legislator, Carmen Muñoz is asking Security Minister, Mario Zamora, to justify the purchase of 50 luxury vehicles costing some $78,000 each by the Ministry of Public Security (MSP) intended for use by “higher ups” in the MSP.

According to Muñoz, an order placed by the MSP through the government’s electronic procurement system known as “CompraRed” on December 10th, 2013 commissioned the purchase of 117 vehicles from Purdy Motors, 50 of which are luxury Toyota Land Cruiser Prados at a cost of about $78,000 each.

“We want to know what reasons justify such a substantial purchase when we know that right now the Coast Guard is begging for resources to purchase equipment,” Muñoz said.

Muñoz sent a letter to Zamora yesterday afternoon requesting an explanation for the purchase.  At the same time, Muñoz sent a letter to the director of the Coast Guard, Martin Arias, asking him to detail the most urgent needs of the Coast Guard.

“In times of deficit we have to be very careful how state resources are used,” Muñoz added.

I suspect the president of Uruguay doesn’t have an in-your-face arrogance. I just don’t understand why the Costaricense put up with government flagrancy.

Then get a less than 0.5% raise offer and complain.. Pura Vida eh!

YOu can buy a 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe 4×4 for half of what the Toyota Prados cost. Is there some kind of “deal” with Purdy Motors that we don’t know about?

Ironically, nobody calls this type of outrage “corruption” – just business as usual. If any good has come of the gender-based double standard used against the current president and her administration, it is that Costa Ricans will continue to scrutinize the abuses by public officials. I suspect that tax cheats and officials who give themselves perks such as these will continue to be exposed and run out of office.
