Swarm of killer bees attack spectators at “tope”

February 17th, 2014 (InsideCostaRica.com) A swarm of Africanized honey bees, known colloquially as “killer bees” attacked spectators and horses during a horse parade known as a “tope” in Ciudad Colon over the weekend.

The Red Cross attended at least five people who were injured in the attack.  A horse also fell to the ground after suffering a large number of stings and required treatment.

Africanized bees, originally produced through cross-breeding, are known to guard their hives aggressively, with a large alarm zone around their hives.
