Costa Rica’s ban on political advertising starts today

January 30th, 2014 (InsideCostaRica.com) Beginning today, Costa Rican law prohibits all forms of political advertising until the conclusion of the general elections on Sunday, February 2nd.

No political organization can engage in any form of advertising in the media, be it newspapers, radio, television, or the Internet.  In addition, distributing polls or surveys by any means is also prohibited beginning today.

Both political parties and media outlets that violate the ban are subject to sanction and punitive measure by the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE).

However, TSE officials explained that there are no restrictions on news reporting.

The ban will end on February 2nd, the day of the general elections.
