Costa Rica will be home to first Disney theme park in Latin America, mayor confirms


Update / Editor’s Note: Disney has since denied that it has any plans to build a theme park in Costa Rica.

December 4th, 2013 ( The Disney Corporation has acquired land near Liberia, Guanacaste, on which the company intends to build Latin America’s first Disney theme park.


Rumors of the theme park have circulated for some time, but today marks the first official announcement.


The mayor of Liberia, Luis Gerardo Castañeda, confirmed the plan on Wednesday, on the morning show Buen Día, on local television station Teletica-7.


According to the mayor, construction could begin early next year.


The mayor said the municipality is currently working on the issuance of building permits, and expects the arrival of Disney officials in the coming months.

    I just don’t see this coming to fruition. I do not – for one minute – believe that the infrastructure exists in Costa Rica to support Disney’s needs.

      Well – the Liberia Airport quadrupled in capacity over the past three years. We have (or will have) sufficient rooms for visitors. And finally – in this part of the world, Costa Rica is the only stable democracy. Very attractive I think…

    The press officer for Disney Parks in Florida, Sarah Domenech, described as “false” information disclosed by the mayor of Liberia, Luis Gerardo Castañeda, this morning indicating that the global entertainment company will build a theme park in the area. La Nacion website.
