26-year-old becomes first adult to receive lung transplant in Costa Rica

November 6th, 2013 (InsideCostaRica.com) A 26-year-old man has become the first adult to receive a lung transplant in Costa Rica.  The surgery was performed Monday at the Calderon Guardia Hospital.

 

According to hospital director Luis Paulino Hernandez, the man is so far recovering well.

 

The man had been waiting for the transplant for three years and suffers from a degenerative respiratory disease.

 

A team of five surgeons performed the procedure, which lasted nine hours.

 

Surgeons in Costa Rica have performed lung transplants, as well as heart-lung transplants on children in the past, but Monday marked the first adult recipient.
