The incident took place during a wake on Tuesday at the Movimiento Misionero Mundial (World Missionary Movement) church located in Villa del Mar in the center of the city of Limon.
The church’s pastor, Gilberto Coto Mayorga, said the incident occurred during the wake and candlelight vigil for the deceased, 50-year-old Sebastian Castillo Miranda.
The pastor admitted that the area where the church is located is very dangerous, and that it is “very normal to hear gunshots” during service.
Mayorga said the church was also forced to install wire meshing and put bars on the doors and windows, after the church was burglarized a year ago.
The pastor said he believes one of the problems is that police “almost never” patrol the area.
The robbers were able to escape, and the Judicial Investigation Organization (OIJ) is investigating.
