September 20th, 2013 (InsideCostaRica.com) Costa Rica President Laura Chinchilla confirmed on Thursday that she would meet with United Nations (UN) Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon to discuss growing tensions between Costa Rica and Nicaragua next week as part of the United Nations General Assembly.
The meeting between the leader of the UN and Chinchilla is scheduled for September 27th, according to an official of the Presidency.
Chinchilla announced on Tuesday that she would seek a meeting with Ban after tensions with the country’s northern neighbor flared once again, over an alleged Nicaraguan invasion of Costa Rican territory by the dredging of two canals in the wetlands surrounding the disputed area of Isla Portillo.
Costa Rica and Nicaragua have been involved in a number of border disputes since 2010 at the International Court of Justice (ICJ). Both claim the area of Isla Portillo as their own.
