Troubled airliner caused scare at Costa Rica’s Juan Santamaria International Airport

July 8th, 2013 (InsideCostaRica.com) A Boeing 757 operated by American Airlines and carrying 180 passengers circled Costa Rica’s Juan Santamaria Airport for almost 15 minutes in order to burn fuel in preparation for an emergency landing on Friday, after apparently suffering problems with its ailerons.  The airliner had arrived from Miami, Florida.

Ailerons are the flight control surfaces located on the trailing edge of an airplane’s wings.  According to initial reports, the problems were caused due to a problem with the airliner’s hydraulic systems.

Costa Rican authorities were forced to close the airspace surrounding the airport.  Fire and rescue personnel responded to the scene.

Fortunately, the aircraft was able to land safely and there were no reports of injuries.
