Series of earthquakes rocked Costa Rica, largest was magnitude 5.8

June 24th, 2013 ( A series of five earthquakes – all with epicenters in Nicoya – rocked Costa Rica yesterday afternoon.


The first tremor occurred at about 1:35 p.m. near Los Angeles de Garza, in Nicoya, measuring a magnitude 3.3 on the Richter scale.


That tremor was followed by the strongest of the temblors, a magnitude 5.8 quake which struck two kilometers northwest of the town of Zaragoza, also in Nicoya, at 2:00 p.m.


Three additional minor temblors followed, with the last occurring at 2:50 p.m.


Reports of shaking caused by the magnitude 5.8 event were received throughout the country, though no injuries or damage were reported.
