Residents in Puntarenas threw homemade bombs at police to protect narcos

June 19th, 2013 (InsideCostaRica.com) Residents of Fray Casiano, in Chacarita de Puntarenas, threw homemade bombs known as “chirribones” and stones at police in order to help drug trafficking suspects escape arrest.

The incident occurred yesterday at 5 a.m., when officers of the Judicial Investigation Organization (OIJ), Fuerza Publica, and the Drug Control Police (PCD) raided five homes in the community.

Though none of the officers were injured, the actions of the residents allowed two of the suspects to escape.

The bombs known as “chirribones” are similar to those used in blast fishing.  Officials also confiscated four firearms.

The raids in the community were part of a larger operation conducted in various parts of Puntarenas as well as in Limon.  The operation aimed to dismantle two drug trafficking gangs involved in narcotics distribution in Puntarenas.

Both Francisco Segura, director of the OIJ, and Security Minister Mario Zamora described the operation as a success.

In total, officials conducted 30 raids and arrested 24 people.  Among the arrested were two leaders of the two gangs involved.  The band apparently transported drugs from Limon for distribution in Puntarenas.
