March 21st, 2013 (InsideCostaRica.com) A looming possible strike by gas station operators which could potentially leave Costa Ricans and visiting foreigners without fuel during Holy Week and the Easter Holidays would be detrimental to the national tourism sector, according to Tourism Minister Allan Flores.
Gas station owners are threatening a general strike if a price reduction that was approved by regulators goes into effect.
Authorities insist that despite the threats, they are moving ahead with the 6 colon price reduction, which is set to be published in the official newspaper tomorrow. Gas station operators say they will go on strike beginning Saturday if the reduction is indeed published tomorrow as planned.
The Tourism Minster is calling for dialogue with and between the parties involved to avoid a strike during the Holy Week holidays, which he called the most important time of year for the tourism sector. Flores called for “sanity to prevail.”
