March 21st, 2013 (InsideCostaRica.com) After changes in the law, municipalities now have the power to decide for themselves whether to enforce the traditional “dry law” that prohibited the sale of alcoholic beverages during certain days of Holy Week.  In the past, the dry law would have been in effect from next Wednesday until midnight on Friday.

As a result, the Municipality of Nicoya has decided that it will not enforce a dry law this year.

Mayor Marco Antonio Jimenez said the decision was made in order to avoid the illegal sale of alcohol during Holy Week.  Jimenez added that the lifting of the prohibition was a sign of confidence in the residents of Nicoya that they could celebrate in moderation.
