March 1st, 2013 (InsideCostaRica.com) An organized movement on the Internet which began just one week ago has already collected more than 24,000 signatures calling for Justo Orozco to resign as the president of the Human Rights Commission of the Legislative Assembly.
The movement, called “Hatred and Homophobia out of the Legislative Assembly,” began on the web site, avaaz.org as an online petition. The petition with signatures was sent to the Legislative Assembly president, Victor Emilio Granados.
Orozco has made headlines the last few weeks, by claiming that gays can be “cured” with therapy, as proposed by a controversial Spanish doctor.
Costa Rica’s Psychologists Association roundly denied that such a cure exists, and said any psychologist performing such “therapy” could face punishment.
Emma Ruby, director of the organization that started the petition, said their aim is to raise awareness amongst deputies to never again put Orozco in the Human Rights Commission.
According to Maria Paz Cambronero, a representative of the organization, the signatures were collected in just four days.
Orozco has said previously that he will not resign his position, saying, “I can certainly say that I am one of the most intelligent people in the country.”
