
February 27th, 2013 (InsideCostaRica.com) The City Council of Heredia unanimously approved on Monday night to declare the canton off-limits for the planting of genetically modified crops, becoming the 45th such canton to prohibit GMO crops in Costa Rica.
Eduardo Lopez, a member of the Bloque Verde (Green Block) environmental movement, said that the process to declare Heredia free of GMO’s was a long one, but that the end result met the expectations of the environmental sector.
“Students from the UNA, the Green Block, and local organizations were all mobilized,” Lopez said.
Lopez said the next cantons where the environmental sector will focus its efforts against GMO crops are in Valverde Vega, Sarapiqui, Upala, Zarcero, and Miramar.
