February 12th, 2013 (InsideCostaRica.com) North Korea has carried out its third and most powerful nuclear test to date in the early morning hours Tuesday, and said that “even stronger” actions may follow.
The blast was significantly stronger than the regime’s 2009 test, though apparently conducted with a significantly smaller device, which observers say indicates the country has taken a step towards its goal of equipping its long-range ballistic missiles with nuclear warheads – missiles which could reach U.S. territory, such as Hawaii.
The blast registered in South Korea as a 5.0 magnitude event on the Richter scale.
The U.N. Security Council will hold an emergency meeting in New York at 9am EST.
The United States, U.N., Russia, China and others have condemned the test.
The regime of Kim Jong-un described the test as “practical approach” to address the “hostilities” of the United States, which he referred to as his “sworn enemy” days ago.
