5 dead after blaze at motel in Santiago de Puriscal

February 8th, 2013 (InsideCostaRica.com) Five people are dead and two seriously injured after a fire broke out at 1:24am at the Las Águilas motel in the center of Santiago de Puriscal, on the south side of the market.

 

According to Mario Viquez of the Red Cross, besides the dead, two patients were in serious condition and ten people were treated at the scene.

 

The two patients in serious condition were taken to the San Juan de Dios hospital and are known in the area as “El Flaco” and “Rikido.” They suffered burns between 30% and 50% of their bodies.

 

According to Luis Salas, from the Fire Department, the victims were elderly.  He also said, in an interview with a local radio station,that the fire spread very fast, making it difficult for the victims to escape.

 

The fire consumed an area of 400 meters and also damaged some nearby shops and stores, including a store called “La Vaca.”

 

The Judicial Investigation Organization (OIJ) and the Fire Department are investigating the cause of the blaze.

 

The identity of the deceased has not yet been made public.
