San Jose municipal council declares canton GMO-free

February 6th, 2013 (InsideCostaRica.com) The Municipal Council of San Jose declared the canton of San Jose would be free of GMO consumption yesterday.

The leader of the Citizen Action Party (PAC), Daguer Hernandez, who introduced the proposal, as well as councilor Eugenia Bermudez, confirmed the announcement. The vote was carried unanimously.

“It is these motions that we are [making on the municipal level] that everyone agrees should be made the national position.  The motion declares that [we will not consume] GMO products, as we do not permit such crops to be planted here, and we support the other cantons [which have taken the same position],” Hernandez said.

Moreover, the councilor also urged other municipalities to make similar declarations.
