Almost one million students return to school for start of 2013 school year

February 6th, 2013 (InsideCostaRica.com) According to the Ministry of Education, 940,000 students will fill the classrooms of 4,550 elementary and high schools this year.

The majority, 456,000 will be in elementary and preschool. There will be 355,000 elementary students, 113,000 children in preschool and 16,000 special education students.

At 9:00 am President Laura Chinchilla will inaugurate the school year at the Palmichal de Acosta Technical High School.

200 traffic officers are ensuring the safety of students as they return back to school. The operations are located in the vicinity of 80 schools.

According to the traffic police, schools located in high-traffic areas are their main priority.

Authorities are urging caution to drivers when traveling near schools.
