February 5th, 2013 (InsideCostaRica.com) A man who was not identified by traffic authorities was run over and dragged 30 meters by a train as he ran in front of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG) in La Sabana, in San Jose.

The accident occurred at 5:20pm last night.  Traffic officer, Esteban Castillo said the man was transferred in serious condition to the San Juan de Dios hospital with “very serious wound” to his head.

Castillo said that according to witnesses, the man was running from east to west along the road that runs next to the train tracks.  When he attempted to cross from Sabana Norte to the National Stadium, he was hit by the train.  The accident occurred on the corner in front of the MAG.

Traffic Police said the conductor of the train tested negative for the presence of alcohol, but was quite shaken by the accident.

Yensy Aguilar, a witness who was waiting for the train at the time, said the man was running shirtless, apparently wearing a headset that would have prevented him from hearing the oncoming train.

“The train dragged him under its spinning wheels for about 30 meters, it was terrible.  People were screaming,” Aguilar said.

The witness said that a woman who was passing by in a vehicle stopped and began providing assistance to the victim.
