February 1st, 2013 (InsideCostaRica.com) Former legislator Rigoberto Abarca turned himself in to the court in San Carlos on Monday, after being on the lam since December.  Abarca had been found guilty of using public funds belonging to the San Juan Housing Association and the State to purchase a property.

A Judicial Investigation Organization (OIJ) agent in San Carlos confirmed that Abarca was in custody, saying that he turned himself in slightly before 5pm on Monday.  His family and attorney accompanied him.

Abarca was wanted for embezzlement.  The court in San Carlos had issued an international arrest warrant for him on January 18th via INTERPOL.

On February 9th, 2009, Abarca was sentenced to 5 years in prison for the crime of “fraudulent administration.” The Sala Tercera (Third Court) restated the charge as embezzlement on December 14th, 2012.

Authorities presume that the man left the country via the Los Chiles border with Nicaragua.

Abarca was a member of the PUSC (Social Christian Unity Party) between 1998 and 2002.

Abarca has been transferred to the “La Marina” prison in San Carlos.
