January 9th, 2013 (InsideCostaRica.com) Two people were arrested on Monday on suspicion of organizing cockfights in Nájera de Cariari, Pococí, near the old bar, “Los Pinos.”
Fuerza Publica officers and the Police Intervention Unit (PIU) of the Ministry of Public Security made a surprise raid on the property where illegal cockfights were allegedly held.
The operation was carried out after an anonymous caller revealed that about 15 people, including children, routinely attended the events.
Police Officer, Juan Carlos Villalobos, said one person responded violently when authorities arrived.
Four Gamecocks were found, alive and bleeding. The animals were fighting minutes before.
In addition, two roosters were found killed as a result of cockfights. Police also seized 65 metallic spurs that are placed on the animals’ legs during the fights, making them more lethal.
Officers involved in the investigation also determined that liqueur was consumed during the events, in which bettors placed bets of up to 100,000 colones.
