21 people died in fires in 2012

January 4th, 2013 (InsideCostaRica.com) Fires in homes and other buildings resulted in the deaths of 21 people in 2012, according to information provided by the Fire Department.


The Department also said that they responded to a total of 1,102 fires last year. In addition to the victims that lost their lives, 103 people suffered injuries.


The number of fires recorded in 2012 is the highest in the past 5 years. There were 217 more fires than in 2011.


The Fire Department also indicated that in 2012, 1,006 people (260 children and 746 adults) lost their homes due to fire.


Investigators analyzed 218 fires to determine their cause. In 25% of the cases, the fire was caused by a failure in the electrical system. 14% were caused intentionally.


13% of the fires were caused by faults in electrical appliances.
