Old 5,000 and 10,000 colon bills no longer accepted as of tomorrow

December 31^st, 2012 (InsideCostaRica.com) As announced by the Central Bank earlier this year, the older 5,000 colon and 10,000 colon banknotes from the previous family of bills will lose their value as a form of payment as of tomorrow, Tuesday, January 1^st.

Stores and businesses are obligated to accept the old bills until tonight at midnight.

According to the Central Bank there are still about one and a half million bills of 5,000 colons and about two million 10,000 colons bills on the streets.

After tonight, the old banknotes may be exchanged for newer ones in any bank in Costa Rica until April 30^th. After that date, however, only the Central Bank will receive the old bills.
