December 31st, 2012 (InsideCostaRica.com) As announced by the Central Bank earlier this year, the older 5,000 colon and 10,000 colon banknotes from the previous family of bills will lose their value as a form of payment as of tomorrow, Tuesday, January 1st.
Stores and businesses are obligated to accept the old bills until tonight at midnight.
According to the Central Bank there are still about one and a half million bills of 5,000 colons and about two million 10,000 colons bills on the streets.
After tonight, the old banknotes may be exchanged for newer ones in any bank in Costa Rica until April 30th. After that date, however, only the Central Bank will receive the old bills.
