December 31st, 2012 (InsideCostaRica.com) According to information from the Ministry of Public Security, Costa Rican authorities confiscated 15 tons and 531 kilograms of cocaine in 2012.
In 2012, the Drug Control Police broke up 109 drug trafficking organizations, twelve of which had international connections, and 97 that worked in the local area.
Celso Gamboa, Vice-minister of Public Security, believes authorities have done a wonderful job this year in stemming the flow of cocaine through the country.
Gamboa also stated that drug trafficking is almost inevitable, and Costa Rica is a strategic point for its transportation.
Officers also confiscated 13 kilograms of heroin, and a total of 5.7 tons of marijuana during the year.
During the administration of President Laura Chinchilla, a total of 26 tons and 857 kilograms of cocaine have been confiscated.
