Costa Rica rings in 2013 with…rate hikes

December 31st, 2012 (InsideCostaRica.com) After all the celebration and parties, it is important to be prepared for the amount of rate increases that will welcome the New Year.

For starters, bus rates will increase an approximate 14%, whereas electric rates will be a total of 17.5% higher, after a 4.5% increase that came into effect in November, and a 13% increase that came into effect on December 26th.  Additional rate increases are planned for early in the New Year, as well.

The water and sewage system also increased its rates in July by 25%.

Meanwhile, as of January 1st, 2013, highway tolls will increase by 10 colons for passenger cars and lightweight vehicles, and for heavier vehicles, the rates vary according to the category of the vehicle and the toll station.

Also, the Telecommunications Superintendence (SUTEL) has a pending approval of a rate increase of 4 to 11 colons per minute for phone calls.

Finally, Costa Rica’s Central Bank is warning that the general cost of living may skyrocket in 2013.
