The hole in the bridge
October 17th, 2012 – Bring the Bailey bridge. The bridge that connects Zapote with San Francisco de Dos Rios, near the Cascada Azul hotel, was closed on Monday until further notice, due to a gaping hole which appears to be growing in the bridge.
An unidentified police officer said that the orders were to not allow any traffic to cross the bridge, as a preventive measure.
Officials from the Ministry of Public Works and Transportation did not provide any further information.
On July 26th, traffic on the General Canas Highway, in the direction of San Jose-Alajuela came to a halt due to a hole similar to the one that is currently affecting the bridge between Zapote and San Francisco.
The National Highway Council (Conavi), at the time, decided to errect Baily Bridge, in order to provide temporarily relief.
However, authorities are concerned that rains forecasted for this month may delay permanent repair work on the highway.
