Chinchilla’s husband found responsible for accident, driving with expired license

SAN JOSE, COSTA RICA – October 8th, 2012 – Jose Maria Rico Cueto, husband of the President, Laura Chinchilla, has been found guilty of causing an accident in Pozos, Santa Ana, on April 12th.

 

The first husband must pay a fine of 108,180 colones, plus cover the costs of damages suffered by the other motorists.

 

The event occurred in Santa Ana, San Jose on April 12th, around 10 a.m. Rico, 77 years of age, was on his way to his home located in Villa Real, very close to where the accident occurred.

 

Two other vehicles were involved in the accident, of which the first husband was found responsible.  According to Transito officials, the first husband was also driving on an expired license.

 

One of the cars had a head on collision with the 1999 Mercedes Benz C200, which Rico was driving, when he errored at an intersection.  The other vehicle involved was a pick-up truck that suffered little damage.

 

Minutes after the accident, the President’s husband was transferred to the CIMA hospital in stable condition. He stayed in the hospital for about 4 hours. The doctors then discharged him. During his statement, Rico denied all charges.

 

Laura Chinchilla has not provided any comment.
