Municipal official may face up to 5 years in jail for AK-47

October 7th, 2012 – A municipal official by the last name of Mena, from the Municipality of Gicoechea, was caught on video showing a guest in his home his AK-47 assault rifle, and may now face from 2 to 5 years in jail as a result.

 

AK-47 assault rifles are prohibited in Costa Rica.

 

The official lives in Los Cuadros, Guadalupe. His neighbors describe him as a calm person, concerned about his community.

 

His coworkers at the Municupality of Goicoechea, speak highly of him as well.

 

However, one person, who prefers to remain anonymous, said Mena has a temperamental character.

 

The Judicial Investigation Organization (OIJ) is investigating the matter.

 

The official stated that a friend – who was killed several months ago, lent him the firearm.
