SAN JOSE, COSTA RICA – September 17th, 2012 – The executive president of the Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE), said that they are concerned about a massive migration of users when in 2013, phone number portability will become possible.
Teofilo de la Torre said they have encountered obstacles with the other telephone carriers and the Telecommunications Supervision Department (SUTEL), in regards to the implementation schedule.
ICE presented a motion to SUTEL requesting to delay the process until 2014. SUTEL denied the request.
On Monday, the notice for bidding for the public contract for a company to be in charge of number portability will be published. The system is estimated to begin service in February.
Number portability will allow users to migrate to another carrier without having to change their phone number.
