Bandits create false rumors of new earthquake in Guanacaste

GUANACASTE, COSTA RICA – September 10th, 2012 – The National Emergency Commission (CNE), received reports stating that several bandits are on the streets with loudspeakers, notifying people in their homes of supposed risk of earthquakes, tsunamis, massive hospital evacuations, and others emergencies, with the sole purpose of getting people out of their homes in order to enter and burglarize them.  This occurred in Liberia and Cobano.

Others called companies and local media and warned them that they “must evacuate immediately” because “the big Nicoya earthquake” was coming. The rumor quickly spread, and many abandoned their homes and ran to the mountains.

The National Commission for Risk Prevention and Emergency Attention has made a call to the population to ignore such rumors, and listen only to official statements.

The National Seismology Network and OVSICORI say that an earthquake cannot be predicted, and reiterates that it is completely normal that aftershocks be felt after the 7.6 magnitude earthquake.
